Owning a home can sometimes feel like having a never-ending “to do” list. That doesn’t include all those Home Maintenance things that can – and often do – go wrong unexpectedly. Yet instead of feeling overwhelmed or waiting until problems arise, a little monthly preventive maintenance can go a long way toward avoiding bigger, more time-consuming, and costlier issues down the road.
Here is a list of 10 chores every homeowner should check off once a month to help keep your home in tip-top shape all year round.
Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
This simple, life-saving task should be at the top of everyone’s list. Check that the batteries are working and replace if needed. Make sure fire extinguishers are full and not expired. And if you don’t have a fire extinguisher, we recommend you get one and install it in or near your kitchen!
Conduct a visual inspection of your HVAC system.
Replace filters regularly, more often if you have pets or if anyone suffers from seasonal allergies or asthma. Look for unusual sounds or odors and signs of leaks, corrosion, or other damage. And don’t forget to have your heating and cooling systems inspected annually by a licensed pro.
Check for plumbing leaks and slow-moving drains.
Look under and around sinks, toilets, bathtubs, showers, and all water-using appliances. Even a trickle of water that goes unchecked can waste thousands of gallons each year and result in costly damage. While you’re at it, clear any slow moving drains. As a preventive measure, remove hair, gunk, and debris regularly. If you experience a serious clog that requires a bit more than your own elbow grease and drain cleaner, contact Eagle Service Company.
Thoroughly clean the garbage disposal.
This nifty appliance makes quick work of cooking prep and clean-up while preventing food scraps from going in the trash, but it can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and foul odors. Pour equal parts vinegar and baking soda inside, allow it to foam and fizz, then flush with water. Throw in some ice cubes and turn on the disposal to sharpen the blades.
Clean and maintain kitchen appliances. Clean or replace refrigerator and dishwasher filters if needed, go through food in the fridge and freezer, tossing expired or questionable items and wiping down shelves and drawers prior to restocking.
Clean range hood and filter. A dirty, grease-clogged filter impedes the performance of the hood vent. Check it monthly and wash with dish soap and water, allowing it to dry thoroughly before replacing.
Inspect electrical fixtures, outlets, and cords for signs of damage. Remember, an outlet or wall switch should never spark or be warm to the touch. If your lights dim frequently, especially when a small appliance is turned on, your home’s electrical might be overloaded.
Walk around the exterior of your home. Look for loose roof shingles, detached gutters and downspouts, cracks in the foundation or gaps in siding, and signs of pest infestation.
