Common Furnace Warning Signs

If your furnace is acting up, it may take a while before you catch on. Here’s one example. As a heating system ages, its energy efficiency begins to fade. In that instance, you might suddenly notice a slight uptick in your heating bill but chalk it up to added usage. But if that bill continues its upward trend – month after month even with comparable furnace usage – something is going on.

Other symptoms of a failing furnace, however, are plain as day.  Here are just few to keep an eye (or ear) on.

  • Loud, persistent noises – Furnaces are designed and built to be felt, not heard.  So, if you’re now hearing loud noises – such as popping, wheezing, clanking, etc. – chances are they’re not going to stop on their own. If the fan guard, for example, on your blower motor is hitting the blade, there’s the source of the clanking. As for wheezing or popping? No doubt there’s a problem with your air distribution system that needs to be addressed.
  • A series of hot and cold spots – A well-designed furnace provides uniform levels of heat from one room to the next. If you’re experiencing something different, then there are two likely causes: a problem with one or more of your thermostats or, yet again, an air distribution imbalance.
  • Cycle on, cycle off – Once again, your furnace warning signs was not designed to frequently turn itself on and off. If it’s doing so anyway, it might have been over- or under-sized prior to installation. Or, perhaps, a clogged filter is making the unit work harder to provide the kind of comfort you’ve grown accustomed to.

These aren’t the only warning signs, but they do shed light on how a furnace can inform you that trouble is brewing. That doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced, but it does need to be professionally diagnosed.
