How to Take a Great Shower

There are good showers and bad showers…no argument there.

But what’s stopping a good shower from becoming great? One that doesn’t just clean you, but adds  Great Shower certain health benefits, too? Actually, very little is standing in the way.

Let’s have a look.

  • Important Tip – No Fingernails.

By using your fingernails to scrub your hair, you can scratch your scalp and cause it to flake. Suddenly, you’re blaming the shampoo and, who knows, maybe even switching to Head & Shoulders. So, keep the fingernails in check and stick with your fingertips.

  • How Long and Often are Enough?

Showering every day in the hot, humid climate of Alabama is probably your best bet, especially if you spend most of your time working outdoors. Otherwise, every other day is just fine. On the flip side, a 10-minute shower consumes up to 50 gallons of water. A low-flow showerhead can reduce that amount without depriving you of the longer showers you depend on.

  • Keep Mold Out.  No shower can be perfect when mold starts making a home of your bathroom. To help prevent that, add a ventilating fan if needed, keep it running for about ten minutes once you’re out of the shower, and keep the bathroom door open at the same time to thoroughly dissipate the mist.

  • Not Too Hot, Not Cool Cold.  Super-hot or cold showers, no matter how good they might feel, damage your skin by drying it out. Stick to temps between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Moderate water heating will also save energy, which is good for the environment and your wallet.

  • Use a Moisturizing Soap.  Look for soaps with stearic acid among the ingredients. At the same time, watch for so-called moisturizing soaps with loads of fancy-sounding ingredients – they often can’t be trusted to do a thorough job.

  • Don’t Over-Scrub. As harmless as they might appear, aggressive body scrubbing with a loofah or washcloth can remove the skin’s protection layer. Experts recommend soft, cotton baby washcloths, instead. And while exfoliating is good for your skin, don’t do it every time.

  • Moisturize Your Skin While It’s Still Damp.  Use the ambient heat from the shower and humidity to enhance the effect of moisturizing creams, which means put it on right after showering. Lotion soaks into skin best when it’s a little damp.
