Common Furnace Myths

The internet is a wonderful thing filled to the brim with useful information, entertainment, and just about anything else you’d ever want to know about or see. Yet, it can also be a source for mis-information, no matter how well intentioned.

Take your home’s heating system, for example. Just a few search engine clicks and you can find endless tips for reducing your heating bills. And although some are quite helpful, others will leave you taxing your heating system and wasting vs. saving money.

Here’s what NOT to believe about your furnace.

Myth – Crank up the thermostat to make your home heat up quicker.

Truth – Your home will take the same amount of time to heat up no matter what. If you really want to save a few bucks, install a programmable thermostat and set it to keep your home cooler when you’re away and warm things up shortly before you return.

Common Furnace Myths

Myth – Ceiling fans are for summertime use.

Fact – Yes, the cool breeze from a ceiling fan certainly helps to combat summertime heat, but it also can add to your indoor comfort and reduce your utility costs in the winter. Simply reverse the direction of the blades – that is, clockwise – which works to push warm air down from the ceiling, making you feel warmer and allowing you to turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees since less heat will be needed from the furnace myths.

Myth – Close vents and return registers in unoccupied rooms.

Fact – Sounds logical enough, right? But doing so prevents warm air from being distributed equally throughout your home. Your furnace will compensate by working harder to warm up the rooms where vents and registers remain open.

Myth – Annual furnace maintenance isn’t necessary.

Fact – You might be thinking of the adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. While there’s some wisdom that that, none of it applies to your heating system. Annual maintenance helps improve operating performance, reduce heating costs, and extend equipment life.
